The barbicans are wooden beams that were used to widen the first floor of the buildings. To prevent people from taking advantage of the measures expanding too much, a standard barbacano was exposed as the maximum measure reached for the expansion of the upper floors and avoid abuse.

On the marble sample Barbican the Latin phrase “Per la iurisdiciom de barbacani” is engraved to underline the importance of the exposed sample.
