The word squero comes from squara, a tool used by master shipwrights in the boatyards where small vessels like gondolas, pupparini, and other types of traditional Venetian boats were built and repaired.
Today, the Squero of San Trovaso, dating back to the 17th century and located along the Rio di San Trovaso, is one of the few remaining historical squeri where gondolas are still built and repaired using traditional methods.
Another squero open to visitors is located in the Castello district — the Squero di Sant’Isepo, where you can meet Cesare, who will show you ancient Venetian boats and explain how they’re built.
The Squero di Sant’Isepo is a cultural association that warmly welcomes visitors and offers the chance to learn more about the rich history of Venetian maritime traditions.
