Venice was built on more than 120 islands connected by over 440 bridges.
Originally, all the bridges had no railings, and the only original bridge still standing without a parapet is the “Ponte del Chiodo”, located in the Cannaregio district, near Ca’ d’Oro, on Fondamenta San Felice. 749.
Today, all Venetian bridges are equipped with railings; “Chiodo” was the surname of the noble family that once owned the bridge.
The only other bridge with this feature is located on the island of Torcello, where you can admire the much more famous Devil’s Bridge (Ponte del Diavolo) — a twin to Venice’s Ponte Chiodo.
