The three flagpoles

The three flagpoles standing directly in front of St. Mark’s Basilica represent the three kingdoms conquered by Venice: Cyprus, Candia (modern-day Crete), and the Morea (now the Peloponnese).
Note the bas-reliefs depicting Doge Loredan along with lions shaped like griffins, mermaids, and tritons — works created by Alessandro Leopardo in 1505.
